What should I expect during a visit to Dr. Adeline Kell, ND and A Better Choice Medical Clinic?

When you walk into the office at A Better Choice medical clinic, you should expect to feel comfortable. Sitting with your mug of medicinal tea or a glass of water in our soothing and beautiful waiting area, you will not feel rushed (as you do at most health clinics) or as if you have to fight to get into your appointment before the doctor leaves for the day.

Being listened to is the most universally reported experience when visiting a naturopathic doctor. Many patients describe this phenomenon as 'unique' in their medical experience. Listening is certainly not unique for Dr. Adeline Kell or the other practitioners at A Better Choice. Dr. Kell will typically take up to an hour and a half for an initial visit.

Dr. Adeline Kell will ask you to describe your symptoms, your usual day, and the foods you eat. She will ask about your work, the stresses in your life, about family and friends and your medical, physical and emotional history. While you answer, she will listen carefully and ask follow up questions to make sure she fully understands your responses. Subsequent visits generally run thirty to forty-five minutes and focus on an physical examination combined with a respectful, engaged dialogue between doctor and patient.

Naturopathic doctors are trained to treat you (not just your symptoms). Instead of prescribing an antihistamine to treat a patient with a runny nose, a naturopath works to find out why the patient's nose is running in the first place.

Could the problem be allergies? A virus? A bacterial infection? Dr. Kell will spend the time to find out why a patient's nose is running, and address the root cause instead of covering up the surface of the problem.

Allergies, for example, can lead to digestive disorders, which can lead in turn to dermatologic symptoms. Dermatologic symptoms can lead to stress, which can lead to chronic pain. Chronic pain can lead to fatigue which can lead to depression. In conventional medicine a patient might be separately diagnosed and treated with allergy medicine, stomach medicine, skin medicine, bed rest for fatigue, pain medicine, and antidepressants. Each discrete pharmaceutical treatment comes with its own spectrum of problematic side effects. Dr. Kell, however, assesses your symptoms as a whole, often finding that they are interrelated. When the cause of the symptoms is treated, all of the symptoms improve.

A Better Choice Refers:

At A Better Choice, you can expect naturopathic doctors to be trained to recognize symptoms that do not seem complex from the outside but signal a serious underlying problem. Dr. Kell encourages patients who need they further diagnostic work-ups or treatments to seek specialists outside of her practice. At A Better Choice, all practitioners also regularly refer patients to other specialists in natural health care and mental health in order to give each patient the best possible care.

What should you expect during a visit to A Better Choice? You should expect the best.
